Introduction to a Restless Minded Writer

Here’s an introduction to a restless minded writer. My name is Julie Kieu. I like to think of myself as a “Jack of all trades” because I can’t seem to focus on one area for expertise. For example, my hobbies include: reading, photography, longboarding, playing instruments (guitar, ukulele), and so much more. But! I like to think that this allows me to experience more in my life without limitations. Aside from hobbies, I am all up for a relaxing day every once in a while, doing absolutely nothing and not having to worry about work, school, and social obligations.

On the academic side, I am currently a sophomore Psychology major with a minor in Nonprofit Management at the University of Oklahoma. I’m wanting to become a Counseling Psychologist or anything similar in that area. I love helping people, and I feel like the best way I can contribute is to listen to people and counsel them the best I can. Somewhere along the way, I’m hoping to join or create a nonprofit and give my assistance for free counseling. Preferably, I would like to work with young children to high school students, but I am open to specializing with older people as well.

Here are some fun facts about my life: I have lived in Oklahoma my entire life, but I want to move to New York or Seattle in the future. My favorite color is blue, and my lucky number is 7. I have a nerdy side that loves Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and other fandoms. I want to travel the world and start a collection of something from each place. I may or may not have a mug obsession, but that’s up for anyone’s opinion. I am a middle child and only girl in a family of five. And last but not least, I have a four-year-old Maltese named Luna, who I am absolutely in love with.

  1. Julie, I'd say we have very similar interests, from favorite color to loving Harry Potter. I completely understand having a lot of interests because I seem to always find new hobbies. I think your career goals are very admirable and it's super cool that you want to help out students! Also, your dog, Luna is adorable and I'm sure she is just loads of fun to be around!

  2. Hello Julie! I think it's cool that you have so many hobbies and interests in different categories! I could never longboard, I'd fall right on my face! I love Harry Potter! I think its cool that you want to be a councilor! One of my best friends wanted to be a councilor, I hope you can follow your dreams and embrace your goal!

  3. This sounds like it can be a really fun class for you, Julie, with lots of space in which to create and explore. In a way, the stories we are writing for this class are kind of fandom stories: epic fandom! And of course there are possibilities for all kinds of mash-ups too: the Patil sisters make a perfect connection from the world of Hogwarts to the world of Indian stories, and Doctor Who can go anywhere in time and space... plus the whole idea of Vishnu and his avatars is kind of like the different Doctors, but just more far out and unusual. If you are curious about those avatars, there's a great article at Wikipedia: Dashavatara ... and in addition to those main ten avatars, Vishnu had other avatars as well, even a woman: Mohini. So maybe that will be something you will want to explore in the class! :-)

  4. Julie, it's a wonderful thing to be good at so many things! I am kind of opposite, I feel like I'm average at a few things. School and relaxing are pretty big priorities in my life I'd say. If you love Harry Potter, I definitely recommend going to the Harry Potter theme park at Universal in Florida. It's amazing. I am definitely obsessed with Harry Potter. Your doggie is definitely a cutie too! Thanks for sharing!

  5. Hi Julie, you and I share several traits, so I feel like we are old friends. Firstly, I too was a bit restless about what I wish to do in my career trad rectory, I too was interested in clinical psychology, so when I first arrived at OU (with my 120 transfer credits, don’t get me started) I was a PRE-MED/ PSY major. I loved the research class, but something just wasn’t a good fit. So I abandoned my obsession with ME-SEARCH and ended up in Construction Science, What!!?? So what I am saying is you clearly should come over and be a project manager with me, no? Just kidding. As you have probably studied in your classes by now, correlation does not denote causation and previous behavior does not indicate future results.
I have been to both New York and Seattle. Id say, if you are new to traveling, you want to go for Seattle first. Unless you wish to see New York as in the State, upstate New York is known for its Fall season. When I lived in Southern Main, We would have to deal with what we called “Leaf Lookers”. This was the phenomenon that took place due to all the “Out-of-Staters” driving through to see the Beautiful 100’ trees as far as the eye could see with the appearance of fire from all the many diverse colored leaves.
I will give away my age a bit here and tell you that Seattle was the place to be when I was about your age. It was the dawn of the “Seattle Sound” also know as “The Grung”. It was our generation’s version of “the Alternative Scene”. There was suddenly a ton of groups coming out of Seattle with cool sound. The bands were, to name a few, Sound Garden, now Audio Slave, a derivative of Motherlove Bone, which also spawned some member of Perl Jam. There were many others but the above and probably “Alice in Chans” were my favorites. If you want to see a great movie about that scene during my time and the Seattle Sound, you should check out the movie “Singles”.
Sorry to go on and on but you mentioned a few topics that bring out the nostalgia and make me want to sit down, drink a cup of coffee, and talk about it : )

  6. Hello Julie! I think that it is awesome that you have so many hobbies. I sometimes struggle to find one that I really enjoy. I have similar aspirations as you do. I want to become a mental health counselor. I absolutely love your dog, she is so precious! I want one so bad, but for the longest time I was scared of dogs. I hope I get one soon though! It was nice meeting you.

  7. Hi Julie! Kudos to you for doing so many things! (I was a cheerleader all my life and that was basically all I ever had time for), so it is cool to see all the interesting things other people do! It's so cool that you have a passion for helping people and want to make that a part of your career! I wish you the best with all of that! That's awesome that you want to go live somewhere like New York or Seattle... I have never been to either one of those, but I've heard they're fun! Haha. And your puppy is so cute! Nice to meet you!

  8. Nice to meet you Julie! Your dog is adorable!! It is good to have a variety of hobbies so that you never get tired of them. You can just switch off between them. It sounds like you have a good mix of hobbies for all times of the year- you can longboard or do photography in the spring and summer when the weather is nice and you can play instruments and read when it is cold in the fall and winter!! I look forward to reading your blog- I bet it will be really interesting!!

He's super big, but so cute so I definitely can understand your feelings of being in love with your dog! They're amazing pets!

  12. Hi Julie,

Nice to meet you! It is really cool that you play the guitar and ukulele. I always wanted to learn the guitar but never got around to it. I have always been interested in Psychology. I think it would be really interesting to study how people think. It would be a very useful tool in daily life. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  13. Hi Julie, I love that you are part of the Doctor Who and Harry Potter fandom (because I am too). Ahh the fandom life! 14. Hi Julie! I just finished reading one of your stories, and made my way to your introduction. It was so nice to read about you! I think it is great that you consider yourself a jack of all trades, and that you believe this allows you to experience life without limitations. I completely agree, and share this personality-trait and philosophy with you. My lucky number is also 7 (lol).

I know a lot of psych majors here at OU! Had I not gone the route that I did, I probably would have chosen psych. I think the human mind is so interesting! I personally, love to study personality, but also have an affinity/soft spot for mental illness. Sounds like you have a lot of potential, and your head in the right place. Keep it up, and hang in there! Your dog believes in you, and I do too! :)

  15. Hi Julie! Your dog is so precious! I think it’s so cool that you enjoy doing so many different things. I am in love with Seattle. I would love to live there, but I love everyone in Oklahoma. My boyfriend and I always discuss Seattle. Haha. I am a Psychology/Pre-Dental major, and I love it! I think the classes are super fun. It’s nice to meet you!

  16. Hi Julie, I love how many hobbies you have! Sometimes I wish I had more hobbies but between school and work I usually just end up sleeping or watching TV. I also think your plan for the future is great. I think the world needs more people with your interests and I’m sure you'll make a great psychologist. I also have an insane mug collection!! I have gotten one everywhere I’ve traveled for the last ten years or so. I love it though because it’s the most useful collection.

  17. Hi Julie! All of your hobbies sound like so much fun! I am trying to teach myself how to play the guitar right now actually! I stink at it, but I really enjoy it. What a small world, I have a dog named Luna too! She is an all-white husky and got her name from Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. Did you name your dog after something specific? I also have a mug collection too! It kind of happened by accident, but I love that I have so many. I look forward to reading some of your stories!

  18. Hello Julie, nice to meet you! It is super cool that you find interest in so many hobbies and are willing to try anything that sounds fun to you. I love Harry Potter also but have not seen Doctor Who. I have heard good things about it so I may need to start that soon. Your dog, Luna is very cute! Nice to meet you!

  19. Hi Julie! I think that what you want to do with your career after college sounds very rewarding. Working with elderly people can be difficult, but it is so important! Your dog is so cute by the way! And I too think that I have a mug obsession. It is just so easy to get them! Thank you for sharing!

  20. So many hobbies! Hi Julie. I think it is great that you have so many hobbies. In my introduction I call myself the eclectic soul, so i love finding more people who are eclectic in what they do! Im really hoping you choose to share your "nerdy side" in your stories! Best of luck finishing out your year and I look forward to reading your work!

  21. Hi Julie! I’m super surprised that I have not read your introduction yet! That is awesome that one of your hobbies is photography. I have been wanting to get into photography as well! Also, it is nice to see that you are a psychology major! I am a senior and just now taking my first psychology class and it is super interesting! Good luck on the rest of the semester and the rest of your college career!

  22. Julie, it's amazing at how talented you are. Photography, long boarding, and playing instruments are all tasks and hobbies that require skill. Do you think that you could post some of your photography or a video of you playing the guitar or ukulele? I think it's great that your passion is to work with children and teens because that is around the times where children need the most guidance by both parents and positive mentors outside of the home.

  23. Hello Julie! I'm surprised I have yet to encounter your blog yet so far. Some things we have in common are we've both lived in Oklahoma our whole lives and enjoy to longboard. It's really cool that you want to help the younger generation whenever you get an adult job. I myself don't know if I'd have the patience to work with kids. The only way I'd be happy working with kids is if I was a high school math/ computer teacher.

  24. Hi, Julie! You're one of the last people I'm doing this for. This is surprisingly the first time I am seeing your blog! I also have lived in Oklahoma my whole life. I am more than willing to call this home! I admire your enthusiasm about your future career path, I wish I had the same type of aspirations haha! Good luck working with kids in the future!
